Little scientist, have you ever discovered a potato that had been forgotten for a little too long?
Have you ever noticed that something had grown on the surface, like small stems?
They are called sprouts.
Today, we will do a sprouting experiment in order to better understand this phenomenon.
Let’s go!
MATERIALS
- 2 eggs
- Cotton balls or some soil
- Seeds (lentils, peas. . .)
- 2 egg cups or a roll of toilet paper cut in half
- Markers
- Water
- 1 teaspoon and a bowl
STEP 1
- Put the seeds in your bowl.
- Add enough water to cover the seeds.
- Let the seeds soak for a few hours.
STEP 2
- Crack the eggs and try to break only the top half (you can use a butter knife or crack them on the counter).
- Empty the eggs and keep them for a future recipe.
- Rinse the eggshells.
STEP 3
- With your markers, draw a funny face on each eggshell.
- Put the eggshells on your egg cups or on your toilet paper rolls.
- With your spoon, fill the eggshells with soil or with cotton balls.
- Add a little bit of water.
STEP 4
- Put the seeds on top.
- Make sure the soil always stays moist.
- Observe what will happen in the next few days.
- A small white stem appears on the seeds and a stem begins to grow.
ALL DONE!

Today, little scientist, we will make an experience that fizzes and foams!
That’s right, we’re going to make hearts that transform like magic before your eyes.
Do you want to try?
Let’s go!
MATERIALS
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Food colouring (2 colours)
- Glitter
- 2 bottles
- Water
- 2 heart-shaped moulds (optional)
- A container
STEP 1
- In a bowl, pour your baking soda and add some glitter.
- Add a little bit of water until you get a thick paste.
STEP 2
- Put the paste in your two moulds or make two heart shapes with your hands.
STEP 3
- Put your hearts in the freezer for a few hours.
- Take them out and wait a few minutes.
- Remove them from the moulds and put them in your container.
- Put vinegar and food colouring in the bottles.
STEP 4
- Pour the vinegar on the hearts and look closely!
- What is happening? The hearts foam up and crackle!
IT’S MAGICAL!
You can continue to add vinegar until the hearts disappear completely!

Have you ever wondered why polar bears aren’t cold when they jump into icy water?
Do you think it’s because of their thick fur?
Today, little scientist, I offer you a new experiment that will help you find the answer to my question.
Let’s go!
MATERIALS
- 1 big bowl of cold water
- Ice cubes
- Fat, butter or margarine
- 1 wool glove
STEP 1
- Put the ice cubes in the bowl of cold water.
- Put on your glove.
*The glove mimics the polar bear’s fur.
STEP 2
- Dip your finger in the icy water.
- Do you feel the cold? Yes, because your glove is wet.
The bears’ fur doesn’t protect them from the icy water, just like your gloves when they are wet.
STEP 3
- Take off your glove.
- Coat your finger with a thick layer of fat.
STEP 4
- Dip your finger in the cold water.
- Can you feel the cold? No, because polar bears have a thick layer of fat that protects them from the cold, just like the grease on your finger.
EXPLANATION
t’s because of their thick fur that polar bears are not cold when they lie on the sea ice, and their thick layer of fat protects when they jump in the icy water. This layer of fat can add up to 10 cm!

How about a fun experience with Santa’s favourite drink, little scientist?
Do you know what is Santa’s favourite drink?
Let me give you a hint, he likes to drink it with cookies.
Yes, a glass of milk! Let’s go!
MATERIALS
- Milk
- A flat dish
- Food colouring: red, green and yellow
- 2 cookie cutters
- Dish soap
- Glitter
- Cotton swabs
- A small container
STEP 1
- Add some milk in your dish, not too much, just enough to cover the bottom.
- Place the cookie cutters in the dish.
STEP 2
- Add 2 to 3 drops of food colouring in your cookie cutters (use 2 colours).
- Add a few drops of the colour that hasn’t been used around the cookie cutters.
STEP 3
- Add the glitter.
- Put a small quantity of dish soap in your container.
- Dip one end of your cotton swab in the dish soap then dip it on a drop of food colouring.
- Repeat these steps for every drop of food colouring.
OBSERVATION
What do you see?
The food colouring swirls and flees, just like the soap that chases the dirt off your hands or off the dishes.
HAVE FUN!
You can continue having fun by removing the cookie cutters, adding more food colouring and more soap.

Have you heard about capillarity? It is a fascinating phenomenon where sap circulates through the trees, and then maple water drips into your bucket !!!
Here is a little experiment that will help you better understand this phenomenon.
MATERIALS
• 2 saucers
• 1 piece of wool
• Water
• Food coloring to help you observe and understand the phenomenon.
STEP 1
• Mix a few drops of food coloring into a 1/4 cup of water.
• Add your colored water to one of the two saucers.
STEP 2
• Put the two saucers side by side.
• Wet your piece of wool and put each end in the middle of each saucer.
STEP 3
• Now watch what happens… Look! The water is circulating around one end of the piece of wool just like when the sap circulates in the trees’ fibres.
STEP 4
Just like the maple water that drips into the bucket, your water is going to travel through the piece of wool and flow into the other saucer.
IT’S ALL DONE!
Have you ever gone to a sugar shack and tasted the maple water that is dripping into the buckets on the trees ?

Do you sometimes find your bath time is a little boring ? I do sometimes.
To help make bath time more fun, here is a great idea to make a soap that you can have fun and wash with.
It is also very silky and smells really, really good!
MATERIALS
- ¾ cup of cornstarch
- ½ cup of body gel soap
- ½ tbsp. of olive oil
- Food coloring
- 1 big bowl
- Plastic wrap
STEP 1
- Put the cornstarch in the bowl
- Add a little bit of soap at a time (you may not need to use it all)
- Mix well with your hands
STEP 2
- If the dough becomes too sticky, add a little more cornstarch. If the dough is too grainy, add a little more soap
- Once your dough is perfect, add the olive oil
- Mix it well
STEP 3
- Separate the dough into two balls
- Press a hole (not all the way through) in the middle of each ball
- Add 2 to 4 drops of food coloring
- Mix it well
STEP 4
- Make a heart shape with each ball of dough
- Wrap your new creations in the plastic wrap
SMELLS GREAT!
It’s bath time! Wow, that smells really good!
If you add water to your soap it will become stickier and melt. You can now create new forms!
